One can only think about political theory so much...
So today someone shared with me the interesting view that, quote: "PMS is just a Western myth spread around by the media."

(I think if I posted this alone I'd get a fair few interesting responses.)

Naturally, I dissuaded him of this view. Calmly, for which I'm proud of, considering the last few days he had just dismissed as 'mythical.' *Wry grin* Even the other guys in the room just gave him this look. With the help of a biology student, I enlightened him as to the role of those lovely things we know as hormones.

I wonder if anyone's ever tried to assert that horniness, aggression, and machismo are myths. Except that those are always present in creatures with testosterone... then again, plenty of girls don't need PMS as an excuse to be unstable. *'Nother wry grin*

Some not-quite-sorted thoughts. I'm about to use the "one hand ... the other" cliche twice. You've been warned.

I think I see where that's coming from (the gentleman's view that PMS is mythical). PMS is two different things: on one hand, the actual physical phenomenon. Which, I'm with you, is 100% real. On the other hand though, it's an excuse, something women throw around for whatever reason. Well, it probably has to do with this bizarre enthusiasm women seem to have for being recognized as "bitches" -- you know the sort of thing, "If I'm angry at you, you'll know!!" PMSing makes you "fierce" which is a good thing (apparently; I don't get this mentality at all).

PMS -- the name, etc -- serves to make women more self-aware. That awareness can be used by a woman on one hand to reassure herself that everything's ok, and will get better. On the other hand, she can use it to recognize when she's doing something hormonal and then excuse that action. I have a little bit of a problem when I see women do careless or petty things and then declare that they're PMSing by way of explanation or dismissal. I prefer to use the knowledge to catch myself when I'm being irritable and then try to correct it or compensate to some extent (however successful).
